I don’t know who needs to hear this, but audacity is a necessary ingredient for a fulfilled life.
Actually, I do know someone who really needed to hear this in 2020. And she figured it out all on her own. Let me tell you her story.
It’s no news that 2020 has almost everybody losing their minds, but for Akua Theresa Powell, the pandemic hit even closer to home.
Tucked away in one corner of the world, Ms. Powell’s well-paying HR job had always felt like a safety net she could recline in forever. To most people, she was living “THE DREAM”. A great role in a reputable institution that paid well enough for her to enjoy the luxuries of life, including one of her favorites: travel. What could possibly go wrong?
But then came quarantine.
Suddenly, the world came crashing down. One minute, life was normal; the next minute, Ms. Powell found herself having to worry about her sick mother who was across the sea, on another continent, in another country. With no ability to travel and her mother’s life in jeopardy, she was forced to confront something bigger than a career. Doctors were seriously doubting that her mama would make it out alive. All of a sudden, here she was, bracing for the worst.
Thankfully, her mother recovered. But that experience made Theresa realise how fickle life can be. She realised how many of us go through life doing what’s expected of us - working hard, chasing the “dream” job - but never stopping to ask, What truly makes us fulfilled?
The weight of this realization prompted an audacious move that would change her life completely. At 50, she chose to step away from the “dream job” and made the audacious move of leaving her cushy job and choosing to build a life she wanted to live.
She asked herself:
What would she rather spend all her time doing? What would make her absolutely fulfilled?
The answer? It was simple.
The intersection of two of her greatest passions - people and travel - led her to the next phase.
Five years down the line, Theresa Powell has been able to create the amazing travel and retreat company, Dream Catcher Global.
Her goal? To help women, especially Black women, who’ve lost themselves to the noise of this world, who feel stuck and unsure, find themselves and catch their dreams through fun outdoor travel adventures.
The community, joy and fulfillment she has witnessed with many of her travel companions in the past few years have brought so much meaning and beauty to her life, she can proudly say that these last four years have been the best four years of her life!
